10 Tips to Choosing a Home Improvement Contractor:

  1. Have a clear picture of what work you want done. If you want specific materials, fixtures or appliances, be specific in your description to the contractor.

  2. Meet with multiple contractors in person to make sure there is a mutual understanding about what needs to be done and to make sure you feel comfortable dealing with a particular person. Chemistry with your contractor is important.

    a. Find out how long they have been in business?
    b. Are they licensed, bonded and insured?
    c. Will your project require a permit?
    d. Have they done similar projects in your community?

  3. Ask for references. Be sure to ask the references if they were satisfied with the contractor's work, the price and the time frame for completion of the work. If HCC has referred a contractor to you, we have already checked several references.

  4. Ask to see the contractor's work; visit several sites if possible.

  5. From multiple contractors, request a formal bid based on exactly the same plans and specifications for proper comparison.

  6. Don't always choose the lowest bid. A higher bid may be worth the price in better materials, workmanship and reliability.

  7. Choose a contractor who is available to do your project in a reasonable time frame.

  8. Choose a contractor who can best meet your needs in terms of price, value and quality.

  9. When you have made a selection, ask to see his or her contractor's license and double-check insurance coverage. HCC checks each contractor for their required and up-to-date licenses and applicable insurance.

  10. Once a contractor is chosen, you and your contractor should agree upon a written contract and both of you should sign it. Be sure that your plans are thought out thoroughly. Charges for change orders and extras add up very quickly. The final payment should not be made until the job has passed final inspection. The contract should include at least the following:

    a) Both of your names, addresses and specific details of the work to be performed.
    b) Specifics of materials to be used, including color, model, size, brand name and product.
    c) Start and estimated completion dates.
    d) Details on when and how payments will be made.
